Mariann Marczi is a Hungarian concert-pianist, soloist and chamber musician. She is professor at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest. Her DLA / DMA dissertation deals with "György Ligeti's Etudes for Piano" (2008). She was awarded Habilitation in 2022 at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest.
Performing at 45-50 concerts a year, she has played in the most prestigious concert halls in Hungary and in most European countries and in the United States.
Mariann Marczi has made recordings for the Odradek Records label.
Her first album "SPLINTERS" featuring 20th Century Hungarian Works for Piano in 2013 was nominated for the BBC Music Magazine Award.
Her second album, “PAST VISIONS” paying homage to Schubert and Schumann, was released in 2019.

The Hungarian pianist Mariann Marczi was educated at the conservatory in Budapest, and is professor there today. She dedicated her debut in 2015 to a purely Hungarian program, here she presents a Schumann Schubert CD with lots of clarity and a rich sound-colour. With "dense" can her play be well described in intensive expression. Dynamic and in style always a little disciplined, but with a lot of sense for atmospheres and a very differentiated attack. Her rich experience with contemporary music certainly contributes to the pianist's "attempting to approach Schubert through the polarities of distant musical epochs". She finds convincingly her own tone of voice, with which she does justice to the character of each miniature. This also applies to Schumann's Waldszenen: the emotional components of these small forms is particularly pronounced, Mariann Marczi sets them sounding wonderful.

Those who look well at Schubert's piano works will also come across the twelve Grazer Walzer from September 1827. They were written at the same time as the 6 Moments musicaux but never officially published at the time. The Hüttenbrenner variations were created exactly ten years earlier.
They are based on a theme from the slow part of his String Quartet No. 1 in E op. 3 from 1816, which is related to the allegretto from Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. Schubert must have known both works and it is not surprising that he was inspired by them. There does not seem to be a recording of Hüttenbrenner's quartet (ten, there are two).
That is why it is precisely these two works that make this publication so interesting.
The Dozen Grazer Walzer enjoys more prominence. They have already been recorded by Till Fellner (Erato 0630-17869-2), Alice Ader (Chant du monde LDC 278875), Karl Betz (Christophorus CHE 0115-2), Charlotte Baumgartner (Gramola 98824) and Vladimir Feltsman (Nimbus NI 6298) .
The Hungarian pianist Mariann Marczi made her debut on a CD in 2013 with the recording Splinters, featuring twentieth-century Hungarian piano works by Kurtág, Ligeti, Kodály, Lajtha, Bartók, Jeney and Csapó (Odradek ODRCD 307) that was warmly received. Given her status, the pianist should be much better known.
She knows very well how to distinguish between the three types of Schubert's music and skillfully brings them to life. That Schumann's Waldszenen from 1849 also succeeded nicely because, according to a forest-like, rather dark atmosphere, which sounds a bit deserted though not depressed, is justified and understandable. But in this CD, think especially of both unknown pieces by Schubert!

Mariann Marczi recounts her repertoire with remarkable thoroughness, which is already commendable in scope. More importantly, this list is not merely a document of former programs, but a track record of past experience. What has been learned has by no means become a "completed past" after one or more performances but influences future musical work and performances too. To such effects can many features of Mariann Marczi's play traced back, which should not be put into words, for any such approach carries the risk of misunderstanding. I like to emphasize the "naturalness" of her play, in which it is needless to ponder the proportions of awareness and instinct. Presumably, the experience of a large amount of thoughtfully learned compositions will be at work in this – which can be compared when someone, through her extensive reading, not only expands her vocabulary, but uses her knowledge to always choose the most appropriate word. It is hardly enough to describe her play that everything is practiced to be safe in her performance - so much more is this technically problem-free piano play, such as the flawless recitation is much more than faultless articulation. All sounds of longer or shorter movements are alive – their life notwithstanding their simplicity is more than vegetation, since they are part of processes and we can only be glad to meet them in their natural environment.
As if Mariann Marczi were to share Leopold Kohr’s opinion (small is beatiful and in other respects slow is beautiful), she does not want to over-emphasise anything. Therefore, outbreaks and peaks gain extreme importance in the relatively narrow dynamic framework. However, due to the sophistication of her play, the barely varying repetition-return cycles never become boring. There are no sentimental emotions, and this interpretation is generally devoid of any romanticizing exaggeration. The greatest strength of the play is that this way of expression is very natural to the pianist, such as the subject and the volume of the performance in a small group of people for those who are certain that they have interesting things to say. Especially in the less-known Schubert works, this attitude of the artist bears fruit. During the ten minutes of the 12 valses, the audience hardly raises questions as to why others, at other times, do not play them – “it contents itself” with a once-in-a-lifetime experience that can be invoked countless times thanks to this record.
To Schumann’s cycle of “Forest scenes” also applies the classicizing discipline - here the audience notices, in addition to the message of the music, the details of “playing the piano” (becomes more receptive?) - tilting, playing modes, articulation details. Perhaps because it feels that the beautiful narrative here could be more poetic, more "perspective", and endure stronger visual associations?

Ha azt nézzük, miként játszik, megállapítható, hogy igen erős a billentése, kimért, a hangoknak jelentős hangsúlyt adó tempót vesz, s alaposan végiggondolta és megfontolta, hol húzzon határokat, melyik művet melyikkel érezzük rokonnak. Mindazt a munkát elvégzi, ami egy zongorista mint interpretátor feladata, de ezen túl is megy, nevezetesen akkor, amikor a játszott művekre mint lélek-anyag hordozókra, mint meditációs objektumokra tekint. Ha vannak kiemelkedő pontjai ennek az összességében remek lemeznek, akkor azok a századvég szülöttei: az itt még sejtelmesnek is ható Kurtág-művek, Ligeti Fém című háromperces etűdje, és Jeney Zoltán két munkája. A Fém játékos lüktetése, a Jeney-szerzemény borongóssága megerősíti a hallgató érzését: ez a lemez a huszadik századi magyar zongorairodalmat rendkívüli perspektívából láttatja - Kodály és Bartók ismertebb műveit mintha az előadó a modernebb következmények felől venné szemügyre. Nemcsak hagyomány és modern egymásra épülését mutatja fel, hanem egy speciális magyar vonalat is, mely, ha nem is tűnik töretlennek, mintha legalább olyan következetesen épült volna, akár a dallamvonal Marczi Mariann keze alatt.

Csodálatraméltó például az az érzékenység, amellyel Marczi Mariann megszólaltatja Kurtág György tömör, az eszközöket a minimumra redukáló „szilánkjait”; ahogyan a lecsengő hangok előkészítik a rájuk következő akkordokat, és képzeletünkben elhallgatva is átúsznak az új harmóniákba. Ám éppily mesterien érzékelteti a művésznő Ligeti György etűdjének fémes jellegét, kitartóan kopogó ismétlődő hangoktól megkeményedő szilárdságát, amihez a képzeletbeli ragyogó felületek utánozhatatlan szépsége járul. A másik oldalon pedig Bartók Béla disszonanciákkal kísérletezgető összhangzatainak leheletfinom hangulatfestéseit érzékelhetjük a népies dallamok alatt. A burleszkek játékosak, határokat feszegetők, néhol kifejezetten meghökkentőek, mégis mindvégig emberiek és összetéveszthetetlenül egyediek.
